Workplace Savings NZ says it is concerned about the risk of overburdening KiwiSaver providers with regulatory red tape, but otherwise is entirely supportive of any changes to the rules for regulating KiwiSaver that will benefit KiwiSavers over the long term.

Research by Treasury economists casts doubt on the conventional view that we are hopelessly improvident and feckless.  The conventional view is founded on estimates of household saving rates which show households year after year spending more than they earn - $1.14 for every $1 of income in the year to March 2009.  But saving rates are slippery things to grab hold of and measure.

People who join KiwiSaver but don't choose which fund they want to be in could be put into a more aggressive fund under a recommendation made by the Capital Markets Development Taskforce.  The taskforce yesterday released a 140-page report on its recommendations which included a raft of proposed changes for the managed fund industry, including the Government's KiwiSaver retirement scheme.

A tax bill introduced to Parliament today by Revenue Minister Peter Dunne opens the way for New Zealanders returning home from Australia to bring their retirement savings with them.
